SEO – search engine optimisation, and you don’t need to be a tech guru to improve your Google rankings and transform your website! SEO is the best tactic to get found online! The Internet is so saturated with add nowadays that the only right way to connect to a customer is to be there when he/she is searching for services that you offer.

Here are ten simple steps to follow and transform your site and improve your rankings:

1. NAIL DOWN WHAT YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU DO

Precisely what it is you offer to your clients, in writing, very short, specific, as you explain it to a child.

Prospective client lands on your page, and you only have 3 – 5 seconds to tell about yourself and your services, convince him/her to become a customer. That’s it!

So answer this:

  • What are you? Are you a local shop, an online store.
  • What is it you are doing? Your services.
  • What is your specialty?
  • What is it, that makes you different?
  • What problems do you solve?

2. CHOOSE YOU KEYWORDS

Keywords are a phrase of four words that people are using to search for you online (four words is optimal). You want to rank for those specific words! And so you need to include those words and related words in your content!

Open Google Search and start typing your words. Automatically it will give you more ideas on how to narrow your targeting area.

Now, the most critical part is not to try to get a bigger slice of a cake by using a broad set of keys, instead be very specific. Use Google Trends where you can find words people search on Google, compare and choose.

  • Use the name of your business or the name of your Services (if you have several services you can have separate landing pages for each or group of related ones).
  • Use Location/Locations.

All this should be on your front page, first to see after landing, following by “Call to action” and “Contact info”.

Meta Description is short info that appears under the title in the search engine. It is the most valuable real state on your website! Use it well!

3. UPDATE YOUR META TITLE AND DESCRIPTION

It’s critical to include your keywords phrase in your title and description. Plus you want to use some action words to communicate with a prospective customer and get his attention.

4. OPTIMISE YOUR PAGES CONTENT WITH KEYWORDS

Page content should include those KEYWORDS (or/and related words), especially title, subtitle and texts body.

If your site on WordPress, use Yoast or Mathrank plugins to tell you exactly what to do!

Remember, Google’s become very expert at determining the topic of a page; it can recognise synonyms, closely related words and efficiently determine the quality of the text. So please don’t use your keyword phrase several times just to up the number. Instead, concentrate on the high quality of the information, extensive descriptions, quality photos and maybe even a video on that page.

5. UPDATE YOUR MEDIA FILES

Update your videos, photos and other media files to include description with Chosen Keywords

6. CHECK YOUR WEBPAGE LOADING SPEED!

People are going to leave your webpage if it doesn’t load within three seconds. Its a hard one and might be not your problem at all. But speed is the number one priority in this era. Google is excellent, and it knows exactly how long your page usually takes to load, and it’s not going to show your webpage if it knows that you have a very slow site. Here is how you can check your webpage loading time.

7. Test FOR MOBILE FRIENDLINESS

Most internet searches nowadays take place on mobile devices. So any website must be designed with mobile-first rule! More than that Google penalises you if your site is not responsive. How can you check is your website is mobile-friendly? Easy, use one of the hundred mobile checkers available online.

8. GET YOUR WEBSITE LISTED IN ALL LOCAL DIRECTORIES

Find all of your local business-specific directories and make sure you utilise them all, this will create a most significant difference.

Yellow pages, White pages, Call Connect, Local Shire or Google Maps are just a few. It helps because Google sees you as a real, established business with real clients, positive reviews and local presence. Each of those directories also gives you plus one backlink from a reputable source to your website, and that is another factor increasing your rankings.

9. Create all RELEVANT SOCIAL ACCOUNTS

Make sure to optimise your accounts to include your KEYWORDS in headings, subheadings and other content. Here are some examples of a Facebook business account, YouTube, Instagram, Tic-Tock, Linked-In, Google My Business, Pinterest. See what is relevant for you and make sure to use it! And here is a real tip. You don’t have to be a social media master, follow the rule “Less is More”. Concentrate on quality, not quantity. If you can not post every week, do it every month. Doing this, you are building your Brand, trustworthiness, backlinks, and so improves your SEO.

10. Get some genuine review

Sites like serviceseeking  or productreview. Get your listing on any relevant review sites/ Focus on Getting Reviews

11. FIND AND FIX TECHNICAL SEO ISSUES

My favourite tool to analyse a website is Neil Patel. It has paid membership, but there are some tools you can use for free. Check the site audit tool. If this is too technical, you might think to hire an SEO expert to do that.

12. RESEARCH YOUR COMPETITORS!

And Do It Better. Please have a look at what others have to offer, what they are doing exceptionally well, learn and make it better. Use Neal Patel tools to find out their keywords, backlinks and unique content they might have on their webpage. This will give you some ideas on how to improve your website and its SEO.

If you are a local business, the most obvious way is to build a network of local businesses promoting each other. Google especially like those links that come from related websites in your industry. Write a quality article for other webpage and link it back to you.

13. BUILD YOUR BACKLINKS

Now, after you have done all or some of those, you won’t see the results immediately. Google takes time to analyse User Experiences and index new information. Use Google Console to apply for immediate indexing and SEOquack Extention to analyse your progress.
